Sweden has the largest, and fastest growing, e-commerce of pharmaceuticals in the Nordic region.
The general trend of increasing e-commerce also affects how consumers buy their medicines. The Nordic Competition Authorities recently published a report which shows that Sweden has the largest, and fastest growing, e-commerce of pharmaceuticals in the Nordic region. The Swedish e-commerce market consists of about 6 percent of sales of pharmaceuticals. For comparison, Finland currently shows a slow market development with the online pharmacy market amounting to less than one percent of the local e-commerce market. The differences between the Nordic countries are probably based on the fact that there are major differences in each country’s regulations in the area. The de-regulation of the Swedish pharmacy market in 2009 aimed to create better access to pharmacy services and pharmaceuticals throughout the country, and it is permitted for pharmacies to only conduct online operations.
